Performance of "Drum Grid" by Navajo composer Raven Chacon by Penny Lazarus Piano Studio

  • The Mall and the Rail Trail Pond Street Newburyport, MA, 01950 United States (map)

Drum Grid is a composition for numerous drummers, each positioned on a street corner. Beginning with a single drum hit from one player, subsequent drummers imitate the sound of the previous drummer down the block, with the sound evolving as it travels around the neighborhood. Over time, our students will naturally misinterpret their cues which adds beautifully to the original musical action. By the performance's end, we will come to a new appreciation of listening to others, the landscape, our community, and the marvelous reverberation of sound. You might ask “But aren’t we pianists, not drummers?” Well, rhythm is essential to all music. And the piano is considered a percussion instrument because of the hammer action that hits the strings to create sound! This event will be the kick-off event to our project studying “Indigenous Composers of the Americas”!
